Will: filed on 23 January 1843, Carroll County, Wills, Liber 1837-1852,
p. 247-248.
In the name of God Amen. I, Nicholas Harrison, of Carroll County, in the
State of Maryland, being sick and weak in body, but of sound and
disposing mind, memory, and understanding, considering the certainty of
death and the uncertainty of the time thereof -, and being desirous to
settle my worldly affairs and thereby to be better prepared to leave this
world when it shall please God to call me home, do therefore make and
publish this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following,
That is to say, First and principally I commit my soul into the hands of
Almighty God, and my body to the earth, to be decently buried at the
direction of my executrix hereinafter named, and after my debt and
funeral charges are paid, I devise and bequeath as follow:
I give and bequeath unto my dear wife Mary Ann Harrison all my property
both real estate and personal property and that she hold and possess said
property so long as she Mary Ann Harrison continue my Widow.
If at any time she with the advice of her friends may find it best for
herself and children to divest of said property and purchase with what
she receives or may receive from the said property when sold and purchase
property elsewhere she is at liberty to do so.
In the event that Mary Ann Harrison now my wife should cease to be my
Widow by marrying again or by death in either case I give and bequeath
said property now willed to my wife to be equally divided among my
children.
Whereas all my servants are manumited at the age of thirty years with but
one exception, therefore I desire and will that the youngest named
Caroline Johnson, now about three months old, be free at the age of
thirty years so that my heirs or assigns have no claim on said Caroline
Johnson after she is thirty years old.
And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my dear wife Mary Ann
Harrison to be sole executrix of this my last will and testament,
revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, ratifying
and confirming this and (unreadable) my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof I hereunto have set my hand and affixed my seal this
first day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
forty two.
