Baltimore City Birth Records Beginning 1865

In 1865 a law was passed by the Maryland Legislature requiring that all
births and deaths were to be recorded by the various civil
jurisdictions. Most jurisdictions complied - at least for a short period
of time. As our readers will observe in the following records, the
decrease in enthusiasm for recording births either on the part of the
authorities on the part of the populace, is quite evident. In 1875
Baltimore City did institute a program for recordation of births and
deaths. Although the records after this date are complete, the program
gained in strength and continues to this day.
The following records were transcribed from a book found in the Baltimore
City Hall in 1971. It was brought to the Maryland Historical Society by
a newspaper reporter for viewing. While in custody of the Maryland
Historical Society Library, the following transcription was made. The
volume was picked up from the transcriber and presumably returned to the
Baltimore City Archives. Although at this late date, 1991, its
whereabouts is unknown.
In transcribing these records for publication, certain shortcuts and
abbreviations have been used. The place of birth of each individual
although stated in the original, is here not stated unless it was other
than Baltimore City. Abbreviations are: f/w: female/white; m/w:
male/white; FO: father's occupation; b.: born; Rec.: recorded.
