Vernon died after a long illness. The death certificate claimed spinal
meningitis, but Vernon loved to chew on his wooden toys. He chewed on
the window sill where he used to stand to watch for his Daddy to come
home, and he chewed on his bed.
Knowing what we do today about lead paint and lead poisoning, I believe
that was the actual cause of his death.
My mother told me about how they took Vernon from doctor to doctor over a
six-month period hoping to find someone who could make him well, but had
no success. She told me that close to the end, while Vernon was so very
sick, that Dad gave
Vernon a direct blood transfusion in a desperate attempt to save him.

She was Episcopalian.
Martha was 12-15 years younger than Thomas Greenfield when they were
married. She outlived him by 24 years. When she died, she was between 74
and 79 years old.
An interesting story has been handed down about Martha: "She was a woman
of great force and managed her husband's estate after his death. She
persisted in horseback riding as an elderly woman. She fell and broke a
leg and walked with a limp for the rest of her life." Their home was
known as "Magoonskin", named after an Indian village.
