Bob and Kristin's Marriage Homily
by the Rev. Thomas H. Markley
St. John's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va.
August 2, 1990
Into this Episcopal Church come today a Lutheran bride and a Methodist
groom...and that is all right. Perhaps some of our tradition has rubbed
off on Bob and Kristin to send them on their way to North Carolina. They
have worshiped with us for several months, and I have personally enjoyed
their presence among us.
Most couples who are married in this wonderful old church are Richmond
residents, and they remain in Richmond after their marriage. That is not
true of this couple. Bob has been living in Charlottesville, and lately
that has become the address of Kristin as well. That, too is all right.
Perhaps one thing Bob and Kristin are discovering, if they had not
already acknowledged it, is that there are Christian communities
everywhere! The geography doesn't matter too much; the denomination may
not be that important to most. As long as people father for worship,
fellowship, the sacraments and the prayers, the opportunity always exists
to participate in one of those communities of God's people.
Of course, my own hope is that this couple will somehow be able to move
back to Richmond in due time... and maybe become regular members of St.
John's Church! My well-being cannot depend on that, and the welfare of
their marriage cannot wait until my dream comes true. It is their dream
that we attend today. Bob and Kristin have high hopes and not a little
anxiety about their future. I share both of those very real dynamics
with them, and I am confident about their tomorrows — as I believe they
are. St. Paul's chapter on love has deep meaning for them. They realize
that without this unique dimension of our relatedness to God and to one
another, we are in for a real struggle. With it, all things are
possible. Being content in a two-room apartment, eating TV dinners,
wearing last year's clothes, driving an older car, and being satisfied
with a walk in the park for entertainment are not sources of resentment
for not being among the latest generation of yuppies, but rather cause
for celebration that the things of this world have not contaminated the
wonders of the heart.
Bob and Kristin, I will miss you; but I wish you Godspeed in your new
home and your new ventures. I look forward to your visits back to
Richmond, and I hope you will grace this church with your presence when
you do return. In the meantime, enjoy this most glorious day of your
lives, accept the affection of your families and friends, and go from
here to find your place in Christ's Church wherever you are. Amen.

From a note from Walter V. Harrison, Jr., dated April 8, 1998:
Thank you for the Harrison family information you sent me. You certainly
have done a beautiful job.
By way of information, my grandfather had a sister, Laura Harrison Evans.
My father's first wife was my mother. Her name was Helen Bonsal Walker,
born August 23, 1893. My memory is fading, and I'm not entirely sure of
this date. Yet I believe my mother died October 1st, 1960. I buried her
miles north of Baltimore in a church cemetery where her parents and other
relatives are buried.
As a child I never remember Aunt Laura's husband. As I knew her, she was
always a widow. She had one son.
Again I am most appreciative of your sharing your work with me.
Happy Easter!
