He married twice. He married (N) HARPER about 1770. (N) was the daughter
of JOHN HARPER and CATHARINE ADAMS. (N) died before 1798. He married LEAH
GUNN in Worcester Co., MD, December 18, 1798. Bond date. (Mary Beth &
Vanessa Long, Worcester Co. Marriage Licenses) Leah was the widow of John
Gunn d. 1791 Worcester Co. She had a daughter by her first marriage named
Nancy. She is named in the will of Elizabeth Truitt d. 1806 as Leah
Sturgis and her daughter Nancy Gunn was also named. No relationship was
given. The 1783 Tax List shows Richard with "Widow's Lott," "Hardship
Branch," and "Sturgis Choice", 3M, 5F
1790 census of Worcester Co: 2M-16, 2M16+, 4F
1800 census of Worcester Co.: 1M16-26, 1M45+, 1F-10, 2F16-26, 1F45+
In 1808, Richard and wife Leah sold "Sturgis' Choice" to George Nelson.
1810 census is difficult to read, but the entry appears to read Richard
Sturgis SENR 1M45+, 1F-10, 1F26-45
From census records, Richard may have had other children living in his
household, along with his step-daughter, Nancy Gunn.
There is no Richard Sturgis in the 1820 census but there is Levi of
Richard. No will or administration for a Richard Sturgis has been
located. From the census, it would appear that Richard had four daughters
and a third son; however, no further information has been located.
RICHARD STURGIS (III) and (N) HARPER had the following children:
+ 160 i. LEVI6 STURGIS was born about 1770.
161 ii. RICHARD STURGIS (IV) was born before 1774. Probably the Richard
Jr. in 1810 census of Worcester County.
Levi Sturgis was born in Worcester Co., MD about 1770. LEVI died after
1822.
[474] Bond date. (Mary Beth & Vanessa Long, Worcester Co. Marriage Licenses)
