Biographical Encyclopedia MD and DC - 1879 (From collection at Maryland
Historical Society)
Greenfield, Honorable Aquilla H., was born in Baltimore September 4,
1831. His father's name was also Aquilla H. (Hatton) Greenfield. His
father was a merchant and a man of prominence in the city government, a
member of the Council, and from 1840 to 1850 served as coroner. The
maiden name of his wife, the mother of the younger Aquilla, was Harriet
M. Hatton. The grandfather of the subject of this sketch, Nathan
Greenfield was a Methodist preacher in Baltimore County about the year
1740.
Mr. Greenfield was educated at the High School in Baltimore and
afterwards at the City College from which he graduated with honor in
1848, when only seventeen years of age. He then entered his father's
home-furnishing store on Lexington Street, and diligently applied himself
to master the details of the business. His father died September 14,
1850, and he succeeded him the business which he maintained at its former
degree of prosperity.
The political career of Mr. Greenfield commenced in 1871, when he was
elected to the First branch of the City Council where he served on
several important committees. His tenure in the Council was regarded
with such favor by his constituents of the 13th Ward he was returned in
1872 by a largely increased majority. He was honored with an election to
the Presidency of the First Branch of the City Council, which made him
ex-officio mayor at the time of the disastrous fire of 1873, which
destroyed such a large part of the city. Mr. Greenfield acted as Mayor
and by his ability and prompt decisive actions attributed largely to save
the city from the general conflagration that for a time seemed
inevitable. His success as President of the City Council brought him
into such prominence and favor, that in the next year, 1874, he was
elected to represent his district in the State Legislature for the term
of two years.
In the State Legislature, he became prominent as the author of the bill
for the establishment of the House of Correction. This bill he
introduced and defended until in the face of the most bitter opposition,
it became law. This important institution is situated near Jessup's
Station, thirteen miles from Baltimore, on the Baltimore and Ohio
Railroad.
In the fall of 1877, Mr. Greenfield was returned to the popular branch of
the City Council and was made Chair of the Committee of Ways and Means.
In 1881, he was appointed to be a member of the committee to look into
and report upon the building of a new court house. In their report, the
commission recommended the purchase of the square bounded by Calvert,
Fayette and St. Paul Streets, and the erection of a new court house. In
1878 and 1879, he represented the 19th ward.
When quite young Mr. Greenfield made a profession of religion and has
since been connected with and an office bearer in the Fayette Street
Methodist Episcopal Church.
He was married in September 1858 to Miss Vera Virginia Blades, of Talbot
County, Maryland. He has seven children, five of whom are now living:
Jennie, Annie, Laura, William and Edith. Mrs. Greenfield died April 28,
1876. Mr. Greenfield was married a second time October 31, 1877 to Miss
Lydia, daughter of Daniel Harvey, who was for seven years a member of the
City Council and President of the Second Branch and was also a candidate
for Mayor of Baltimore in 1868.
In politics Mr. Greenfield has been identified with the Democratic Party
from his youth. He is widely and favorably known as a man of probity and
honor and exerts a large influence in the community.
The 1880 Census shows that he and his wife lived with his mother who was
widowed. He listed Real Estate assets of $6,000, and his personal estate
at $2,500.

Much of this information was sifted from a cache of private
correspondence, notes, deeds, bills, receipts, newspaper clippings, and
postmarked envelopes found in a box saved from the attic of the farmhouse
at Wilna occupied by Samuel Beauregard (known as Grandpap).
Many birth, death and marriage dates were taken from two Bibles which
were stored at the old house:
Bible published by C. Sherman 19 St James Street, Philadelphia
(1843) and apparently the property of Lydia Parsons Black
Bible published by American Bible Society, New York (1892) and
apparently the property of Willianna Black Greenfield.
