Richard I. He married ELINOR (wife of Richard Sturgis). ELINOR died after
1743. Elinor patented 100 acres "Widows Lott" in 1741. On November 15,
1761 as widow of Richard Sturgis, she sold 50 acres to Thomas Sturgis. On
May 10, 1794, Richard Sturgis (Jr) sold to Samuel Adams Harper 3 acres of
"Widows Lott" and "Harpers Discovery." In 1760, it was resurveyed to
"Chance" by Thomas Sturgis. (Ruth T. Dryden, Worcester Land Records, p.
671) (further research: Elinor may have been a Walton or Jones) Richard
is shown in 1724 Tax List of Somerset County as head of household. He
lived at Mattapony Hundred.
Richard may have been married twice. It is not clear that his daughter,
who married (N) Johnson, of his son, John, were children by wife, Elinor.
Elinor deeded land to some of Richard's sons, but had no interaction with
John.
Will dated April 3, 1743, probate May 3, 1743. Shown as a planter, 100
acres of land surveyed by the name of Hog Quarter last April that the
patent shall come out in my son John Sturgis name. Wife plantation, bed &
furniture, Yoke of steers, mare called Fenix; son Richard plantation
after wife's death; daughter Tabitha trundle bed & furniture; daughter
Nelly high bedstead; son Thomas bed & furniture that is upstairs & new
gun; son John gun that was my father's, steer called Bobb and cow called
Mottley, bee hive; son William, brass gun; son Stephen, gun that formerly
was called John's; grandchild when she is sixteen, a heifer; son Joshua;
executors were wife and son John; witnesses: Alexander Buncle, John
Sturgis, Jonathan Sturgis. (Liber JW2 transcribed by Suzanne B. Hurley,
Ocean City Lifesaving Museum; Worcester Co. MD Wills 1742-1759 JW2, f.7,
