Will at St. Mary's Dtd. 3 Feb 1730 and proven 11 Mar 1733.
Thomas was a planter and politician as well as a Colonel in the Militia.
He was
born into a family of wealth and prominence. prior to his Marriage in
1707,
Thomas was the county surveyor of Prince George County. His wife Susanna,
also
inherited quite a bit of land from her father and brother. At the age of
two,
Thomas had already inherited several hundred acres from his great Uncle
Major
Thomas Truman, Esq. in 1685. Since the Major had no children of his own,
he
stipulated in his 1685 Calvert Co. will that Thomas Truman Greenfield and
his
descendants take the name of Truman. In looking at the fourth generation
(even
the females) one sees it is Truman. Almost no one was given a middle name
until
Maj. Thomas Truman wrote his will. In fact his third son was named Truman
Greenfield.
As early as 1714, at age 32, Thomas was known as Capt. Thomas Truman
Greenfield. He was later commissioned as a Colonel in the County Militia.
He
was active in Politics and was a staunch member of the Church of England
(Episcopal). He had no love for Roman Catholics which was unusual since
his
family had been Catholics two generations back.
His tombstone at Trent Hall, St. Mary's Co., MD and reads "Here Lyeth the
Body
of Thomas Truman Greenfield who departed this life the 10th of December
1733 in
the 51st year of his age."
