Henry was a happy go lucky kind of guy. He would go off to sea for
months at a time and then come home bringing gifts for everyone. Sometime
at about 1924 he came home for a visit, and he returned to his ship.
That Sunday when my mother went to visit, the house was in an uproar.
It seems that the police had found a body floating in the harbor wearing
a coat with Henry's identification in it. Henry's sister Kate went to
the morgue to identify the body, and she told them that the body was her
brother Henry.
Henry was buried in the cemetery lot belonging to the family. The
funeral was very sad, and the casket was closed since the body had been a
long time in the water. Henry's mother mourned for him through the
following months. But one day the back door opened and Henry walked in
with his usual gusto. He went to his mother to hug her, but his mother
almost fainted, crying out, "Hen, you're dead...you're dead!"
The explanation of all this was that Henry had bought a new coat and had
given his old warm coat to a tramp at the dock and had left the
identification intact. Henry's mother insisted that she would not be
buried next to a tramp she had never known. She paid to have the tramp's
grave dug up and to rebury him somewhere else.
