Title: The Formalist Philosophy of Mathematics

Abstract: The view that the subject of mathematics is symbols in "formal systems" (primarily written, but including speech) has various forms. "Glib Formalism" claims that mathematical work can be described as the study of formal systems. Substantive Formalism denies the existence of various other candidates. It is more interesting, but also more vulnerable.
