When using WS_FTP to transfer file to and from a UNIX host to your workstation make sure that you correctly select the type of file it is.

There are 3 choices to select from located just below the directory windows, ASCII, Binary, and Auto.

I’ve always used Auto and have not had any problems with the files afterwards.
